Summer seems to fly by, and before we know it, the back-to-school season is here. While this time of year can be exciting — fresh notebooks, reconnecting with friends, new opportunities — it can also bring a wave of anxiety for both kids and parents.
At Carter’s Counselling Services, we know how important it is to make this transition as smooth as possible, so here are some tips to keep anxiety low and confidence high as your family heads back to school.
1. Start Routines Early
A week or two before school starts, begin adjusting bedtimes and morning routines. Gradual changes make the shift from summer freedom to school structure much easier.
2. Talk About What to Expect
Uncertainty fuels anxiety. Go over the school schedule, the new teacher’s name, pick-up/drop-off plans, and any after-school activities. For younger children, a visual schedule at home can help them feel prepared.
3. Visit the School Ahead of Time
If possible, arrange a quick walk-through before the first day. Meeting the teacher, finding their classroom, or even seeing where they’ll sit can help reduce first-day jitters.
4. Focus on the Positives
Talk about what your child is looking forward to — seeing friends, learning new subjects, joining clubs or sports teams. Highlighting the exciting parts helps shift their focus from fear to anticipation.
5. Practice Coping Skills
Teach simple anxiety-reducing strategies like deep breathing, grounding exercises, or positive self-talk. Remind them it’s okay to feel nervous — those feelings often fade once they settle in.
6. Keep the Communication Open
Let your child know you’re there to listen without judgment. Sometimes the biggest comfort is knowing they can talk about their feelings freely.
